Beavers Build Worlds block print

Beavers are a keystone species, creating complex wetland ecosystems for hundreds of species and providing crucial water quality services by filtering and retaining water, among other things. Yet they are very often viewed as nuisances rather than the brilliant eco engineers that they are and in some areas are trapped and killed as soon as they establish their small communities, even here in Vermont.

With this block print I try to convey the intricate, interconnected habitat beavers are capable of creating if left to thrive. Trumpeter Swans, for example, favor beaver lodges and dams on which to build their nests. The near extinction of beavers trapped for their furs is another abysmal part of this country's origin story and resulted in the loss of millions of acres of beaver wetlands. Trumpeter Swans, senselessly slaughtered for their plumage, also lost their nesting habitat and they too became nearly extinct. Now, mainly in the west where beavers are being protected and valued, Trumpeter Swans are making a comeback. It's my hope that sooner rather than later, municipalities and other governing bodies across the country will recognize that beaver wetlands benefit us all and will make more effort to protect and coexist with them.

This is an original block print. The printed area measures approximately 16" x 11" and the hand ripped paper is 22" x 15". Each one was hand printed in oil based Cranfield inks on heavy weight, archival BFK Rives paper and is signed and numbered.
